about

“Traces of a world that we never knew existed” was composed to accompany the art exhibition, "At Leve Som Gud I Naxkov" by Philip Glazer at Sankt Nikolai Kirke, Nakskov, DK (September 2023). The exhibition commemorates the first Jewish settlers in Denmark who arrived some 400 years ago to the small town on the western edge of the island, Lolland.
Making use of string textures and field recordings from Nakskov to conjure the story of the town’s once “thriving” Jewish community, the expansive and cinematic music brings the listener on a journey from the first settlers’ arrival at Nakskov harbour, to their final resting place in the Jewish cemetery on Jødevej. The piece, along with the exhibition’s visual artworks, gives space to the audience to imagine: What was daily life like for these people? What were their struggles, their challenges, and their successes?

Special thanks to Statens Kunstfond (Danish Arts Council) for their support.
